Melissa Kargiannakis

Founder & CEO

In 2015 Melissa was one of three Canadians and only 60 recipients worldwide to receive the inaugural Queen's Young Leaders Award. Previously, Melissa successfully completed the Studio Y fellowship at Toronto's internationally-renowned innovation centre, MaRS Discovery District. Recently, Melissa was one of only nine founders worldwide to be admitted to the Women's Startup Lab in Silicon Valley.

Melissa holds a Master's in Health Information Science from Western University with research on in-home medical monitoring devices for people with chronic disease published in Journal of Medical Internet Research. Melissa is also entering her second year on the LaunchEDU Advisory Panel for SXSWedu.

 

Dr. Cosmin Munteanu

The University of Toronto, R&D Partner

Dr. Cosmin Munteanu brings nearly 20 years of research expertise in key fields that directly contribute to Heuristext's product offerings, including: Human-Computer Interaction, natural Language Processing, and Artificial Intelligence. Dr. Munteanu is a decorated scientist with nearly 50 publications, many awards, and tri-council support. In 2016 alone he was awarded: 

  • NSERC Discovery Grant (5 years)
  • Connaught New Research Award (2 years)
  • SSHRC Knowledge Synthesis Grant (1 year)

Tammy A. Martin

CFO, Lighthouse Computer Services

Tammy A. Martin is the CFO/Chief Financial Officer at Lighthouse Computer Services, a premier provider of IT solutions, and the 2016 winner of the IBM Choice Award for Top Strategic Business Partner in North America. Tammy has extensive experience leading complex high technology, software and life science companies, through periods of significant growth and transformation, positioning them for success. She has held senior financial leadership positions with firms ranging between $5 million to over $6 billion

in revenues. Her experience with mergers and acquisitions has resulted in the successful sales of small to mid-size firms at prices up to $56 million. She has also evaluated and led strategic acquisitions of IT analytics and security firms in the U.S. and Canada. Tammy received her MBA and bachelor's degree from Bryant University.

In her current role, Tammy has been instrumental in packaging and positioning a late stage SaaS based, cyber security company for a successful exit, resulting in the sale of Lighthouse Security Group to IBM in 2014. Tammy has further led evaluations of new acquisitions for Lighthouse Computer Services, resulting in the purchase of Creative Computing in the U.S. and Acumetrics Business Intelligence in Canada.

Tammy spent 3 years serving on the board of directors for a New England based 503c non- profit and she has also held the position of an adjunct professor, teaching accounting and finance courses at Johnson & Wales University in Providence, RI.

Joseph Fung

VP HCM Products, Netsuite

Joseph, is the Founding CEO of TribeHR, and the Vice President of HCM Products at Oracle | NetSuite with a Bachelors of Applied Science in Computer Engineering from the University of Waterloo. A successful repeat-entrepreneur in the Waterloo Region, with over 15 years leading software technology organizations in Canada, he is a recognized leader in the community.

Joseph’s extensive experience in enterprise and cloud software includes leading the digital engagement program of the G20 Global Sustainability Panel and leading a Digital Media and IT Organization through the design, planning

and implementation of the $69-Million CIGI Campus in Waterloo. For his successes with Lewis Media and CIGI, Joseph was honoured with the CIBC Entrepreneur of the Year Award in 2005 and was recognized as one of Waterloo Region’s Top 40 under 40 in 2011.

Joseph currently sits on the board of directors of Communitech and the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony, and has previously sat on the board of Habitat for Humanity Waterloo Region, the Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery, the Barnraisers Council, and as chair of Lewis Media.

JoN Mok, M.Eng

Group Director of User Experience, Critical Mass

Jon is a Group Director of User Experience for Critical Mass, working between both the Toronto and New York offices. Jon began his career as an Industrial Engineer in the oil & gas industry and, after four years, transitioned his passion for making/building into a career of digital design; he’s been at it for nearly a decade since.

Over the past 7 years with Critical Mass, Jon has brought his attention to detail and dedication to his craft & team, in working with clients such
as Marriott, Infiniti, Adidas, Sears, Clorox, Brita, SAP, the House of Anansi and Citibank. His most recent

achievements include leading user experience initiatives for the Cannes Lions- winning Massey iPad app, and newly redesigned mobile banking app for Citibank US.

Dr. Marek Laskowski

Adjunct Professor, York University

Marek is an early-career researcher, professor, and entrepreneur studying the potential of blockchain and distributed ledger applications to disrupt the technology and business landscape. He also has experience and interest in modelling and simulation of complex social systems, machine learning, data analytics and the design of next- generation participatory decision support platforms.

After earning his Ph.D. in Computer Engineering in 2011 (thesis topic: evolution of behaviour within models of complex social systems) Marek has held several postdoctoral fellowships at the University of Manitoba, York University, and University College London (UCL). Marek is presently teaching in the Master's of Business Analytics graduate program at the Schulich School of Business.
